" If you have something that is of superior quality, and you
look after it, it will last you forever "

This Mercedes-Benz 190 E is a cherished example of the robust
W201-series compact saloon, in single Lady ownership for the
first 30 years of its life, and presented in astonishing
time-warp condition. It is powered by the 2.0-litre four-cylinder
M102.962 petrol engine producing around 117bhp, with rear-wheel
drive via a four-speed automatic transmission. The vehicle is a
one off, do read on..

D477 BLT
First registered to a London Mercedes dealer on 27.1 1987 to
a lady in Lambolle Rd. This stunning 190 remained in her
possession for over 30 years until April 2017. When she
parted with it the mileage was circa 31000.
The second owner, also from London, kept the car a shorter
time of just over three years and literally a few thousand
miles.
In Nov 2020 the 190 steers North moving on to its last owner
from Edinburgh, a fastidious chap who owned other classic
MBs. Five years on and a loss of storage, this and a W126
S Class were made available to me.
The last two keepers have been obsessive with upkeep, with
over £17000 spent in the last nine years seeking excellence,
you get good records however this is another level.

The current MOT is valid until June 2026, and be mindful that
it will be forty years old soon qualifying for classic status
with exemptions. The MOT history is immaculate.
The most recent service was in July 2025, currently wants for
nothing. All five tyres are matching Pirellis, the alloys
without incident, the spare also being in excellent order.

It has all the original handbooks intact, a full set of tools,
warning triangle, spare wheel plus three correct keys and two
security fobs.
Now covered a very low warranted mileage of 47142 miles which
is 100 % correct.
This 190 is as fresh as a daisy, immaculate engine bay, door
inners, boot, immaculate cabin, clean corrosion free underside,
and drives like a new car mechanically.

As it left the factory with a very high specification, this is
the level of spec on S Class models of the day. From what I
can determine all detailed below was a factory option.

W201 Phase 1
From January 1974 to January 1982, Mercedes spent over
£600 million researching and developing the 190 and
subsequently said it was 'massively over-engineered'.
It marked a new venture for them, finally giving it a
new smaller model to compete with the likes of the Audi
80, BMW 3 Series and Saab 900.
An early phase 1 car and all the better for it with the
build quality being known to be of a higher standard.
The phase 1 also looks prettier now, the early cars having
no body-coloured side protection strips, the front and
rear bumpers have a narrower look, the rear apron looks
different, this amongst other measures that ultimately
just diluted the phase 2.

Condition - Show Condition
It’s not a restored car, rather a beautiful original survivor
throughout which retains a wonderful finish. The interior
is in excellent condition as pictured with no wear indicators
at all. This example can be driven right into your garage
and brought back out when its time to visit the shows.
The shut lines and panel gaps are impressive, and there are
no signs of corrosion.
All the light and lenses are free of cracks, chips and clouding,
and appear to be original. The door jambs, bonnet and boot
shuts are in excellent condition, as are the window and door
rubbers.
All the plastic trim has fared well over the the 39 years,
well-oiled and supple, the bumpers have no marks.
The engine bay is pristine, as is the boot. Starts first time
with a recent battery being fitted. The operation of the gears
and brakes etc are superb, the suspension is like driving on
air, soft and supple and has real grace. The steering so fluid
and precise. Mechanically and bodily as good as it gets, you
will not find better. The interior is just super clean.
Reportedly having been garaged by all owners it certainly
has the feel of that care.

The W201
These cars were made during the best years of MB and are
vastly superior to the inferior build quality C Class that
replaced it. They were truly over-developed which is why
they commanded such high prices when new. Mercedes continue
to trade of this reputation despite it peaking in this era,
simply put, there is nothing like it. In fact, it’s a miracle
that Mercedes actually managed to manufacture it at all
retaining a margin of profit such are the high levels of
engineering materials and detail present in putting it
all together. Certainly, could not be done today, mainly
as these materials and processes are no longer employed
in the mass production car business, and it would be a
non-profit exercise!

Summary
Investing your money in this car is a safe prospect.
The build quality and craftsmanship on these eras of
Mercs will never be seen again. Values of good original
W201 models are rising year on year. This example is a
real gem and is easily the nicest one I have come across
for a long time. This car goes to show how effortless
they can look when well cared for.
It is without question one of the very best available.
A great opportunity for the seasoned Benz collector.
