1984 Mercedes 230E 102,000 Miles Timewarp Condition Appreciating Classic A563 THX was registered on the 1st May 1984 The W123 These cars were made during the best years of MB and are vastly superior to the poor build quality of the later models that replaced it. They were truly over-developed which is why they commanded such high prices when new. To this end they were very much cost prohibitive and retained remarkable residual values over the years gone by, now they are starting to rise again as there is simply put," nothing like it ". In fact its a miracle that Mercedes actually managed to manufacture it all with a margin of profit such are the high levels of engineering, quality materials and detail present in putting it all together. Certainly could not be done now mainly as these materials and processes are no longer employed in the mass production car business. Condition - As good as you could ever hope to find Unique among W123s, this example does not appear to have ever experienced neglect. The condition of this car is in many areas like factory new, with nothing changed from the standard specification. Light and airy quality fabric seats, the door cards, dashboard inlays and carpets present like new. Immaculate unmarked paint throughout shines with no areas that let it down when examined closely, it's totally solid and corrosion free. The interior is like new, I can't imagine it would have looked any different back in 1984. The passenger seat and rear seats have virtually never been sat in and the driver seat is free from any wear marks too. The boot, tools, etc. are all in amazing condition, everything you look at is perfect - lift a floor mat and there's a pristine clean bone dry perfect deep pile carpet, lift the boot floor and the spare alloy is like new, lift the bonnet and you'll spit out your coffee in astonishment at how well preserved everything is. The underside is solid and I could not identify any historic corrosion, completely free of fluid leaks, almost unprecedented in my experience for a car of this vintage that hasn't benefited from a nut and bolt restoration. The interior has a wonderful aroma of gentle patination, no hint of mold or damp that so often tarnishes the interiors of elderly luxury cars. All chrome is excellent with no pitting and all rubber trims around the glass are in great order with zero splits or cracks. Being the base model 200 it has manually operated windows and driver mirror, the passenger mirror and sunroof are both electric and in perfect working order. The engine bay is truly immaculate and amongst the best we have seen, it looks much like it must have done when it was new. Drive There is virtually nothing that can go wrong with these cars in this spec and with such a low mileage, the engine is fantastic, starts first time every time. The operation of the gears and auto box are seamless, the suspension, which recently benefitted from new shocks and springs, is like driving on air, soft and supple and has real grace. The steering so fluid and precise a pleasure to use. The immaculate bottle top alloys set the look off well, the tyres are all recent too. The current MoT expires August 2024 and there are zero advisory items to note. The MoT history is really quite astonishing, mostly advisory free aside some silly items like bulbs and brake fluid top ups, feel free to check this yourself, the reg is A563 THX. Next year it will enjoy MoT and road tax exemption and it'll also be exempt from ULEZ charges too. There is a file of recent paperwork present with every historic MoT certificate since the first issued in 1987 at 19k miles to present in 2023. The file includes all the historic tax discs too. Ready to be used and enjoyed. The 200 utilizes the 4 cylinder carburetor engine that can do no wrong, time proven to be more reliable than the larger fuel injected engines. The auto gearbox does the job well with perfect ratios and the car is at ease with either city country or highway driving, and it gets along the road returning respectable fuel consumption along the way.
