Big Bumper MK2 16V
Once a common place sight on the roads of Europe and today
arguably the most
admired and coveted hot hatch of all time. The elusive big
bumper final edition
remains a car that many aspire to however finding the genuine
article that is
not spoiled is a difficult task. The sands of time have ensured
that literally
very few examples remain and of those few even fewer will
present correctly.
This GTi is fantastic in/out/top and underside, and has bene the
property of
that most recent owner for more than fourteen years. The
temptation to meddle or
stray too far from standard OEM spec has been largely resisted.
This big bumper
car is becoming a rarity now given the short 2-year production
window it had.
H836 RNT
First registered and pre delivery inspected by VW Isleworth
22.02.1991 and
showing seven previous keepers. Factory spec includes power
steering, front
electric windows, manual rear windows mirrors and sunroof, and
16" BBS RA RIMS.
Since leaving the factory the steering wheel has been swapped
out with a genuine
OEM G60 leather example, and the front brakes have been upgraded
also to G60 spec, otherwise its stock.
This is not some glossy restored car hiding a multitude of sins,
it’s been
well looked after and maintained literally being lavished with
care by the
chap who has owned it since 2009. The mileage is 109,000, the
most recent owner
purchasing at around 93000 and using it as a high days and
holidays interest. In
this time a considerable amount of money has been spent ensuring
this 16V model
performs as it designed to, and I have to say its a fantastic
drive. A summary
of the main areas of spending are set out below. The car is
completely HPI clean.
Retaining a high degree of originality, complete with leather
owner’s wallet
the genuine service booklet and driver’s handbook. A remote
period TOAD
security system (certificate present) with a total of 3 factory
keys ( 2 + 16V
pill key). The toolkit and spare are complete, also with a
Blaupunkt Atlanta
stereo. The BBS rims are in great condition shod with matching
Bridgestone tyres.
As mentioned, the most recent owner’s tenure commenced 2009 and
below is a summary
of the significant work carried out in that time. Needless to
say this is a car
that has been dry stored and used when the weather has allowed
not intentionally
setting out in rain conditions, as such its extremely well
preserved.
History
Genuine matching numbers car as it left the factory with no
colour change or
adverse accident damage history in its past.
The folder of receipts is pretty much entire, dating back to the
90s, inclusive
of a complete MOT history with a current MOT valid until 1st May
2025 with no alarm
bells and nothing in its past to raise concern. An inspection
underneath reveals
a very solid chassis and underside in general.
Condition
The paint is clean and sharp, very impressive. The seats barely
show signs of wear,
its in lovely unspoiled condition in the right colour, the model
lending itself
well to this popular hue, with only 16V models being offered it.
Equally, all the
plastic trim is in first class shape with a deep lustre, sitting
flush to the body
with factory fit. All paint glass and rubbers are spot on,
engine bay & boot same.
I cannot recall seeing a MK2 with such a preserved interior,
dash, engine and boot.
The many images will hopefully illustrate this. The headlining
is A1 perfect.
On The Road
The car drives as well as it looks with a light clutch, positive
smooth gear change
and beautifully balanced steering. The engine revs freely and
pulls well in each gear
reminding you just how much fun can be had with cars from this
era that beg to be
driven and don’t have huge bhp.
It sits perfectly and rides with no clunks or knocks just a
solid firm and well
absorbed drive. This is an all systems go car ready to be
enjoyed when the mood and
the weather allows. She moves as one whole piece, perhaps even
better than I
remember reaffirming that subsequent generations have robbed the
dynamic
feel and driver enjoyment. If you want practicality, performance
and strength in one
affordable package, few things will deliver like the Mk2 GTI 16V
and is easily the most
practical and sensible everyday modern classic in its price
range.

Summary
Be assured this is a bona fide VW, have a look
about the various advertising platforms to source another such
as this, and that
situation will only get bleaker. It is sure to be a continued
appreciating asset as each
year these models in clean honest condition become more and more
scarce. Prices are
already shifting even for tired cars, there is no comparable to
this in the market
place at present in this price range, and no substitute for
originality and proper care.
Anyone serious must view the many detailed images in the gallery
to
observe the preserved state of the vehicle as a whole. It will
be harder to look
cooler this summer than this.
